My call to Youth in Government happened in seventh grade. I was in the hallway when my teacher called me to her classroom to watch a meeting for a program I had never even heard about. Little did I know that meeting would change my entire life. I know I sound totally cheesy. Youth in Government gave me my voice and helped me become the person I am today.
I distinctly remember staying in my seat the entire time and just taking everything in. I couldn’t believe that people my age were so passionate about things like climate change, abortion, drug laws, and so many other topical issues. At the same time I felt totally clueless. How am I meant to fit in with these students if I have no idea what half of these issues are?
Flash forward to 2020 Early Conference. I had been stressing all weekend. I was trying to balance NIF and my campaign, when I was announced as Governor. None of that stress mattered. I feel so fortunate that I can help to make Youth in Government better and be a voice for all students across Michigan. MYIG has transformed my life and introduced me to my closet friends. From DLR to CONA I have learned many valuable lessons that have shaped me as a leader, but more importantly as a person.
Master Yoda once said, “Silence is not simply calmness or quietude. Over all words and thoughts it implies transcendence. A state of beyond, a state of pervasive peace, it denotes.” I encourage everyone to speak up against all the little evils in society. Use your voice and knowledge, even if it means you get knocked down and discounted. The spirit of Youth in Government encourages students to use their voices and lead others to do the same. I hope we can all use the words of Master Yoda to be better delegates, but more importantly better people.
It’s an honor to serve as your 2021 Early Conference Youth Governor. I look forward to serving you. Thank you for allowing me this opportunity.
God Bless you all,
